International Institute for Nanotechnology

Under the leadership of Professor Chad A. Mirkin, the IIN unites over $350 million in nanotechnology research, educational programs, and supporting infrastructure, while positioning the mid-west and the nation to be a vibrant and growing center for the development of nanotechnology.

In addition to the extensive research and infrastructure at Argonne, the IIN is anchored by major research centers at Northwestern like the Nanoscale Science & Engineering Center (NSEC), the Center of Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence (CCNE), the National Center for Learning and Teaching in Nanoscience. Some of the technologies developed under the IIN umbrella have already been commercialized and are being used by researchers worldwide. Indeed, 15 start-up companies have already been realized.

Supporting the development of innovative educational outreach efforts is also part of the IIN mission. This commitment is realized through innovative educational programs including the Nanotechnology Town Hall Meetings, DiscoverNano website, Research Experience for Undergraduates, Research Experience for Teachers, Nanoscape: The Journal for Undergraduate Research in Nanoscience; and work with the Museum of Science & Industry, Chicago on the development of a nanotechnology exhibit (set to open in 2009).
