For more than two decades, Kartemquin Films associate Maria Finitzo has traveled the globe to film subjects ranging from the command and control of nuclear arms to the psychology of adolescent girls. She has directed, written, and produced for public, cable, and network television, including PBS’s The New Explorers. Her award-winning 2001 feature-length documentary, 5 Girls (Kartemquin Films), premiered at the Taos Documentary Film Festival, then at Chicago’s Gene Siskel Film Center, New York’s Walter Reade Theater, and on PBS’s independentfilm series P.O.V. She recently finished producing and directing No Direction Home (Public Policy Productions), a short film about young people aging out of foster care; and On the Brink…Doomsday (Towers Productions), a two-part documentary for the Learning Channel about times in history when political tensions nearly led to nuclear war.
