When I first saw the photograph it instantly reminded me of a cutaway of a planet. I then thought of a tree of life for my subject because I thought the roots of the tree would emphasize the patterns already present within the photograph. I also chose a limited palette of orange, yellow, blue, and purple to help my images blend better with the photograph. At that point I continued to play around with the image until it worked both compositionally and with my motifs of nature, earth, and life.
